Teflon or PTFE Shaft Packing for Stuffing Box?

Post by Jim »

I am ready to re-pack shaft packing on 22D. Now have new cutless bearing in place, new bronze shaft and re-balanced prop. Based on previous responses to an earlier question on this issue, I do not plan to use the waxed flax packing originally recommended by CD. Should I use a Teflon packing or an expanded PTFE packing (ex. GFO fiber packing)? One brand of Teflon packing recommended the use of a lubricant during installation. The GFO packing does not recommend any lubricant as part of the installation. Please recommend type, brand and distributor, if known. Thanks.

Jim,

We used the green goop and teflon packing material that West Marine sells as the center element between to rounds of standard 1/4" waxed flax. I lubed the flax with the green goop as well. Seems to be holding up quite well; it has been in for nearly two years.

GFO Fiber Packing is the packing of choice. Lubricate the shaft,
stuffing box & packing with clean light oil such as found in aersols.

This oil will provide the packing and shaft lubricant until the
sea water starts to leak & lubricate the packing.

We currently are installing GFO fiber packing with oil as a lubricant
on rotating shafts & shaft sleeves up to 5,000 surface feet per
minute or 3600 R.P.M.& 350 Deg. F. temperatures. This combination
provides the least amount of wear & the coolest running temperatures
of any cuurently available braided packing we have used.

Grease was previously used but it is not recommended because the
grease will hold abrasives, dirt & dust particulate matter that may
cause shaft damage or wear.

As to a local vendor, look in the classified phone book under
"Packing Materials - Mechanical ". If you still have a problem,
please advise your location & we will see if we can recommend a
vendor in your area.

Please advise if you have further questions.

Ken:

Could I use 3- 1/4" rounds of just the teflon packing? Should I use the "green goop" as well? I bought Tefpack 1/4" shaft packing from West Marine. Manufacturer of packing recommends that Syntel shaft lubricant be used. Other choices for lubricant such as green goop?
