Help....Cape Dory 25/Mercury 8hp

Post by Charles Crilly »

Does anyone know if a 1996 Mercury 8hp long shaft will fit in a '74 Cape 25? I have heard that only a few engines will fit without having to do any restructuring with the fiberglass.

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm having the boat surveyed on Wednesday and I'm hoping my engine will fit.

Don't know about the Mercury, but I would just about be sure it is smaller than an '86 Yamaha 9.9, and altho it is tight, she wedges in just fine....

I just installed a 9.9 Yamaha in my 78 CD 25 and it was a tight fit. I then happened on a suggestion from Dana A in the archives on an easy way to get more room in the well. It involves removing the wooden motor board from the metal brackets and inserting one inch plus wooden spacers and rebolting the board back with longer bolts. Now my 9.9 fits with room to spare. I have a 1997 Mariner 8HP (same as Mercury)on our CD 25. It fits into the well with a little effort and I can actually turn the head for some steerage when backing out of our slip. The hatch has to be open, when running, for breathing and to access the tiller arm for controls. As installed the motor is too tall to close hatch. I think the mounting block can be cut down a couple of inches to allow hatch to close when not running and still have access to mounting bolts for tightening. With a remote shift/throttle and appropriate plumbing the engine would probably be ok with the hatch closed.

I have a merc 7.5 hp. She's an old one, but runs great and fits fine.
