Winter cover for CD25-need suggestions

Post by Tom Foley »

This winter I am contemplating keeping my CD25 in the water, fully covered. The Canvas Store, Huntington, NY has a two part cover for $1,200 made of polyester that will last "many years". This seems rather expensive to me. Does anyone have other suggestions/experience that are more reasonable?
Thanks

I don't know what this material is called, but I saw it used in the yard last year for some boats that were in water storage. It was semitransparent plastic that I think will let some light throught and help keep the boat warm. Kinda like a greenhouse effect. I have seen this on there boat for several years so it seems to stand up well.
I would just be concerned if we have a very cold winter with ice. Ice forming around the boat wouldn't be very good for it.

For that price, you could get "many years" worth of shrink wrapping.

What's the reason for in-water storage?

As you know we have a CD25 in South Dartmouth, MA on Buzzards Bay. Two years ago had the boat shrink wrapped. Worked well, nice and dry. Down side $300.00, and even with a small zipper door very difficult to climb in. So when its time to do some real work you had to wait for the shrink wrap to come off. Last year did the wood frame with the blue tarp. A full days work the first year, difficult to get the tarp nice and snug. Could be a problem with snow. Cost maybe $60.00 wood and plastic tarp. Liked the shrink wrap but costly. So if you look at $1200 over 5-7 years might be the way to go compared to shrink. The canvas lets it breath.

Jury still out here
