CHEEZIE HOUSEHOLD DRYER/MARINE VENT HOSE
Cannot believe with all the outstanding work that goes into the production of a Cape Dory, cheezie household dryer white plastic wire-lined hose was used to provide ventilation to the engine area.
Question to others with too much time on their hands: Has anyone yanked that nasty stuff out and replaced it with thin-walled rigid plastic pipe or galvanized sheet metal?

Jim,
I have seen the plastic pipe replacment on a CD36 in Annapolis. I believe it was standard 3" PVC pipe and elbows like you would use for hosehold plumbing projects. The application is very neat and clean, and has the added benefit of smoother airflow and doesn't crush when you lay on it while in the engine compartment. I intend on doing the same solution when time permits.

You are so right...ugly stuff. I did pull mine, with gloves on, after I bought Morning Light (CD28) this year. Have a diesel though, and surveyer and mechanic said ditch the stuff. Re: CHEEZIE HOUSEHOLD DRYER/MARINE VENT HOSE
and it will never get wrapped around your prop shaft inside the boat and take out your shaft log hose like mine did! I just got back in the water yesterday-at a cost of $1,500-for a new prop shaft-a dripless bearing and a new cutlass bearing-I await repayment of most by my insurance company-but there are no hoses of any type going anywhere near the rear of my motor! ever! see yaSteve Alarcon wrote: Jim,

Instead of white dryer hose, how about that flexible black hose that is used for running downspouts under the ground? You know what I mean ... it's pleated and flexible, but it looks pretty rugged? Anyone know what that stuff is called? I'm wondering if it's the right diameter.

Drainage Tile?
Chris,
I think you are talking about drainage tile, although it is certainly not tile, it is what has replaced tile on the modern farm. I have used some by Hancor around the yard which I bought at Lowe's, a competitor of Home Depot. Diameter is about 4.5 inches and it is not crushable even if I stand on it with one foot.
I am sure that other sizes are available, Hancor's line runs from 4" to 60", but you might have to find a farm supply outlet. Buying small quantitities may also be an issue.
Keep on sailing,

Re: CHEEZIE HOUSEHOLD DRYER/MARINE VENT HOSE
Thanx for the feedback, guys. I'm planning a field day at Home Depot, Lowe's tomorrow and will consider my options. I'm concerned about (1) weight, and (2) applicability with regard to connecting to vents on aft deck. But, I will not use that damn dryer hose again.
Also, I think I'd like to hook an electrical fan into the line that pull air from the bilge. I'm not so afraid of diesel fumes as I am the damp air that seems to dominate the bilge and engine areas.
I'll post my decision for your review.
