Prop Zinc for CD-36

Post by Bob Grabham »

After reading the archives for anything addressing prop zincs, I pose this question. Has anyone found a reliable replacement for the Perry nut zincs for a CD-36? The archives talk about Canada Marine and others but I got the distinct impression that there weren't many CD'ers who were pleased with anything other than the original Perry nut. What have you used as reliable replacements? I've got a collar type zinc on the shaft now but would like to go back to the original design. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks to this great source of information.

Bob,
I am happy with my Canadian prop zinc. You need to get the correct thread and install it correctly.

Camp zinc

Post by John R. »

Bob,

There is a Camp prop nut zinc that replaces the Perry Nut beautifully, much better design than the Canada Metals Martyr or the Electroguard units. I will email you some photos of it. You can also read some commentary on this board that I have posted about it in the past, just check the archive messages.

John,
Please email me these photos as well. Email to joels@ids.net

I read your response to my posting on backing over a line, now foulled in the prop, where you pointed out that I should consider replacing by prop shaft zinc by a prop nut zinc. Is this the Perry Nut or Perry Nut equivalent that this message asks about or something different? Any advice on source for a prop nut zinc and what size or shape I would need is appreciated.

Joel,

Yes, this is similar to a Perry Nut but is a better design in my opinion because you don't waste the bronze nut section when changing to a new one after the zinc is eaten away like which occurs with a Perry Nut so the replacement cost is far less.

It installs in a similar fashion by being secured with a cotter pin which eliminates any risk of it falling off which plagues the Martyr and Electroguard zincs. The Camp zinc uses two bronze nuts, one regular hex nut and a castellated nut and the zinc itself has a bronze washer cast into the center of it which becomes sandwiched between the two nuts during installation. The first nut is screwed onto the shaft and secures the prop, then the zinc is slid onto the shaft and up against the prop nut, then the castellated nut is screwed onto the shaft up against washer contained in the zinc thus creating the sandwich, then a cotter pin is inserted through the castellated nut and the shaft securing the entire assembly. To replace the zinc you simply remove the cotter, unscrew the castellated nut, remove the eaten away zinc/bronze washer section, slip on the new zinc, reinstall the castellated nut and the cotter and you are back in business. Simple, easy and very secure, not to mention cheap. What more could a person ask for.

I'm not sure what your boat's shaft size is but my assumption would be 1". You will need to measure it to be certain. Check the wholesale distributors catalog at a local marine chandlers or boatyard in your area to find Camp zincs. They do not have an online website that I am aware of. Check the archive on this board for more info on the Camp prop nut zinc.
