I am ready to install new cutless bearing. It was a chore to get the old one out--had to cut original bearing in two places and then collapse to remove. New bearing seems to fit snugly in shaft log, however, only tried inserting about halfway. Should I try to chill overnite in freezer before installing? Should I lubricate the shaft log first before inserting the chilled bearing? If so, what should I use? A local boatyard worker told me that he uses a 2-part epoxy but I question this on how difficult it would be to remove the bearing in the future if it had been sealed in place with an epoxy. I need to replace the outermost section (about 1/4") of the shaft log where the set screws were located--will need to glass in this area, drill/tap for new set screws. This section was scribed for wiring the original set screws in place. I was not able to remove the old bearing without sacrificing the last 1/4" or so of the shaft log. I had slight wear (0.008") on original bronze shaft in area of cutless bearing and slightly less in area of packing nut. I decided to replace the shaft anyway and plan to go with bronze. Hope I have made the right decisions as far as bronze is concerned and the need to replace. I know others on this board have indicated a preference for stainless.

Cutless Bearing on CD22D--quite a chore--almost done

Be careful!!
Jim,
Just be careful when tightening the setscrews. The cutlass bearing is soft brass and very thin. My suggestion is to rub your finger back and forth on the inside of the cutlass while tightening the setscrew with your other hand and stop the instant any deformation is felt.
Hope this helps.
