Synthetic oil in a Volvo?

Post by Jerry Hammernik »

I need to change oil in my new (to me) CD28. The engine is a Volvo MD-7B. I know the oil should carry a diesel rating. Is a 10W-30 oil OK, or should I stay with a straight weight. A good friend recommends Mobil 1 synthetic in 10W-30. Someone else told me Mobil 1 is offered in a special diesel version. Any thoughts out there about the best choice. Thanks.

Jerry,

A while ago on this website, or I might have heard it somewhere else, it was stated to NOT use synthetic oils in older deisels. The reason I believe was that every seal in the engine will leak oil after you use it. A good grade(brand) of standard 10W30 will also have a diesel rating(look at top of the can). Change oil twice a year and you shouldn't have any problems. I'd not put synthetic oil in Hanalei, after I heard that! Maybe others have additional information, good luck...

Jerry:
I have a 28 FBC with a 200 Volvo turbo and 549hrs on her. When I purchased my boat I called the Volvo Service Tech #(804)436-2800 with the same question re synthetic oil use. Their respones was not to use a synthetic since my engine would not be fully broken in until 900-1000hrs. If I were to use a synthetic use a the Volvo brand and don't put it in until after 500hrs.
The mechanic I use also told me not to use a synthetic. He really knows Volvo since he worked for them and has had a marine service co that only services Volvo's. He did tell me as did Volvo Techs that I should use Volvo synthetic strsight 30wt transmission oil in my transmission.
My 28 is a 1991 hull and probably is newer than your engine. I would be very cautious using a synthetic oil especially if you are regularly changing the oil and your engine is running well.
I am in CT. If you are in this area, I would be happy to give you my mechanics name and number.
Good luck.
