Evinrude Lightwin??

Evinrude Lightwin??
Does anyone have a manual for the Evinrude Lightwin outboard? Two cylinder, 3 HPlightweight from the 50s(?). It has enough info stamped onto the housing to be going on with trying to start it, but it would be nice to know more than that.
So far, it would appear that previous owner did a pretty good job of caring for it. A little WD40 and wiggling broke the piston rings free from the cylinder walls.
I am planning on replacing the gear oil, adding new fuel mix to a very dry tank, and giving a tug on the starting rope. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Re: Evinrude Lightwin??
I'd also rebuild the carb and fuel pump/filter not to mention new spark plugs. These kits used to be relatively inexpensive and not too much trouble to install. If, on the other hand, the recoil mechanism breaks from too much pulling...$$
I had one over 30 years ago and describing it as tempermental is being kind.
Tips: Don't cross-thread the tank cap and always shut the motor off by closing the fuel supply valve (Tee on the tiller side of the lower cowl). Use starting fluid.
Good luck.

Re: Evinrude Lightwin??
Pat,
Thanks for the advice, I will take it to heart. I am doing this for a friend who "inherited" it from another friend's father's estate; if it gets to be too much, I can wash my hands and say, "Thanks, but I don't have the time." It would help move that jon boat around up at the lake though.
A little WD40 got things moving. The fuel tank is dry with no shellac anywhere to be seen. I am hoping the carb is clean too. I'm going to replace the gear oil, mix up some fuel and give it a whirl.
BTW, I have discovered that it is a 3HP engine made between '52 and '54. The web sure makes a difference when trying to research something like this.
Keep on sailing,
Ken

Hello Ken
If you or your friend end up needing parts give a friend of my a try.

I have a 1965 Lightwin 3hp. Runs great. The only problem is the small jet in the carb fuel bowl gets clogged over the winter. Keep the tank empty over the winter. If it only runs on the starter fluid the jet is clogged.

Re: Evinrude Lightwin??
Glad to help Ken,
That the tank is bone dry is excellent, hopefully the bowl is too. Tom's post is right on. Just about every spring the carb needed rebuilding.
Keep us posted.

Re: Evinrude Lightwin??
Tom,
Well, I have the Lightwin running on starting fluid and maybe a little fuel, but I have no idea how to set the various controls, so maybe you or someone else can help. I see no markings that give a clue about the throttle. Where is slow, fast and start when facing the engine? The low speed and high speed jets have nice knobs with markings. Are these intended to be used against an index mark somewhere? Are the markings relative to fully shut?
Is the carb really as hard to pull (two nuts hidden in there at the base of the carb) or is there something I am missing? Can I pull the fuel bowl without removing the carb?
Thanks,
Ken Coit

Found Throttle Markings - Engine Sort of Running
Tom,
I found the throttle markings (on the housing I have removed of course) and the engine has actually started on fuel alone several times. I have not been able to get it to run for more than a minute, so I would still like to get those nominal jet settings. It also seems to be leaking fuel which I have not yet tracked down. Maybe an overnight soak will do some good.
Thanks for your help.
