Wheel for CD28

Post by Bill »

Has anyone added a wheel to their 28CD? I am thinking about adding an
Edson this fall. My only reservation is that I will be too locked-in behind the wheel and between the cockpit seats. I really need to be
flexible in the cockpit.... How small a wheel can I install? Can I move the controls, gauges, key, etc. to the pedestal? Looking for help here re logistics. Thanks, Bill

Bill:
I enjoyed my previous CD28 with a wheel installed. It was installed just aft of the bridge deck with a space (if I recall it right) of about 4 inches, just enough to install winch handle holders. That left a lot of room in the cockpit aft of the wheel and plenty of room for tall people to stand at the wheel without having your hair pulled out by the wire backstay. I had a small destroyer wheel installed that allowed room to maneuver around the wheel and underneath a dodger to go below. Find one that suits your needs. The only negative I found was the extra twist in your body you needed to perform to enter the companionway and go below.

There are advantages of having the wheel forward in the cockpit as opposed to having the wheel near the stern. Your bulkhead instruments and controls (if you have them installed there) are reachable from the wheel. Thats where I had the control unit for the autopilot. You can steer while sitting under a dodger.

If you're not a tillerhead, I think you'll enjoy a wheel.
