CD36 Oil Change

Post by Bill Starck »

I plan on changing the engine oil and filters including the fuel filter for the first time on my new CD36, 1985. I have a Perkins 4.108M 50 hp. I have the Perkins handbook but are there any tips or tricks I should know about before I start?

Thanks

Bill

Don't know anything about Perkins, per se, (I have an antique Yanmar) but I have been pleased with a thing called Oil Boy (West, etc.) for removing the old oil through the dipstick hole.

I'm about to do the same thing this weekend. I don't have any real secrets, but I'm sure there are some good tips out there. Warm up the engine.....in gear....for a few minutes before hand. That of course makes getting the oil out much easier.

When removing the oil filter, try poking a hole in the can before you pull it off. This will allow you to drain much of the oil that is in the filter first (use a jar or something) and make it a little less messy when you actually pull the thing off.

That's about all I can think of.

Bill,
Using the new self contained units that works through the dipstick and stores the drawn out oil in its own container, makes the job much easier and cleaner. As far as removing the oil filter, you are going to need a filter wrench. Take the new filter to an auto store so you can get the right size. I have cut off the bottom section of a plastic gojo hand cleaner container....any similar container will do. I slide the plastic container under the old filter and after it is removed simply drop it in the plastic container and remove it....it works well and there is very little oil spillaqe.
carrying everything on board in a convenient plastic box with a few rags also helps in keeping the interior clean.
good luck....Charlie...cd36 N.Y.

Don't Do What I Did!!

Bill,

The first time I changed the oil, I thought I had the ideal setup: Perkins 4-108 with a hand pump permanently mounted. Slipped a transparent hose over the outlet of the pump, slipped the other end into an empty milk bottle and started pumping. The hose blew off the pump showering the engine compartment with ugly hot black oil. What a mess. Solution? I use a hose clamp on the pump nozzle now and I make sure the milk bottle has a way to vent the air that would like to escape as the bottle fills.

In an earlier post I posed a problem that we haven't solved yet: the pump would not pump until sometime after the engine had run. We are still not sure why. I think the permanently mounted pump is wonderful, but it does need a competent operator.

The filter requires some care too, but that has already been covered.

Keep on sailing,

I have tried all the usual methods and finally installed an electric pump with pickup hose permanently installed. Now, I flip a switch and its over in 60 seconds.
