CD 28 Sailboat
Water starting to drip inside boat through closed portholes when we hose off boat.
Has anyone replaced porthole gaskets on their CD 28 sloop? If
so, where did you find the replacement gaskets?

Contact Spartan Marine at 1-800-325-3287 in Maine.
They are the orginal suppliers.
You should measure your portlights to make it easy to
identify.

Before you replace the gaskets, try cleaning both the glass and the old gaskets. It doesn't take much to prevent a good seal. Worked for me... no leaks.

I would agree with Neil, clean the gaskets and also oil the gaskets to soften them. I had two portholes that leaked on my CD28, oiling solved the problem. I think I used 3 in 1 oil.

Re: CD 28 Sailboat
i didn't know about the cleaning trick, but my gaskets were pretty hard and flattened, so i replaced a few of them with spartan gaskets. i used a piece of 1/2" cpvc pipe cut a a sharp angle to get the old gasket off without damaging the seating groove. i also went to my local rubber and hoe supply house and bought sme spongy neoprene cord to replace the rest as i thought that spartan's prices were pretty steep. the stuff runs about $0.50 per foot and making a butt joint on it is easy with contact cement. that is also what i used to glue in the new gaskets.kew wrote:

Re: CD 28 Sailboat, port hole gasket replacement
You can replace your rubber gaskets with soft neoprene 1/2" round found at your local gasket supply house. Try to get a medium hardness (not to soft, not to hard). Install with contact cement and be sure to bevel the joint. It's easy and a lot cheaper than Spartan. And while you're at it you can install a screen in the port hole at the same time. Just lay a piece of nylon screen across the hole before you lay in the gasket. Close the port to hold in place. When dry just trim the excess screen with a razor blade.
