Trouble Packing Stuffing Box on CD22D

Post by Jim »

I am having a hard time trying to pack stuffing box. Bought 1/4" waxed flax packing. Cut 3 rings with inside diameter to match shaft and began process. First ring went in with moderate to great difficulty. Closed packing nut to seat first ring. Second ring was very hard to push into packing nut--could not push it in uniformly. Now I have just 1 ring in place. It seems that it is extremely difficult to force the rings into the packing nut. Tried a small screwdriver to push the packing in with no success. What am I doing wrong? The original packing that I removed was adhered to the shaft when I loosened the packing nut. Is it normally this difficult to push the packing ring into the packing nut? Is one brand better than another? Should I remove the first ring and try a different brand of flax?

Hello Jim

YES repacking the gland is tough IMHO!!!!!

I use a piece of 1" ID PVC pipe that has been cut in 1/2 so that it will fit around the shaft. I then use the packing nut to seat each round of flax..... It works, but is still not simple.

Maybe others will provide other guidence, but this works best for me....

Good luck and fair winds
