I want to install a bail at the foot of the mast on my CD25 to hookup a boom vang. My question is, how high up the mast must I drill to avoid the base plate stub for the through bolt? I want to get it as low as possible, and would rather not use a trial an error method.

Ron:
I have a boom vang installation spec sheet that was prepared by Spartan Marine which gives the part numbers and mounting locations for all Cape Dorys. I would be happy to fax or snail mail a copy to you, or anyone else who would like one.

Re: CD25 mast bail
I just bought a bail (it was about 3 or 3 1/2 inch, I think...I bent it in a little) at West Marine, then pulled the bolt that goes through the lower casting (inside the end of mast), stuck the bail in place and put the bolt back through. The mast is setting on the casting, not the bolt, so it comes out and goes in easily. This puts the bail as low as possible, for a decent angle. Works fine, so far.

Re: CD25 mast bail
Jim I looked again at my mast step and see that the stub stays with the mast held by the through bolt. So, it makes good sense to use that bolt for the vang bail. It surely will be the strongest attachment, and the easiest to rig. Again this forum has come up with the answer, and I am sure I will have many more questions in the refit of my old CD25. I would like to see that spec. as well. Why don't you send a copy to Walt Bilofsky, the esteemed keeper of this board, and ask him to post it on the Cape Dory specs page?
