Typhoon Turnbuckes

Post by Harvey »

I am having an odd problem with the turnbuckles on my typhoon. I've owned the boat for several years and have never had this happen. Since launching this season I have found the turnbuckles for the lower shrouds undone. Over the last weekend, another turnbuckle came undone and almost resulted in the loss of the mast. Luckily, some passersby hooked it back up, but not before it pulled the bolts an inch into the cabin top.

My question is, has anyone had this happen ? I'm very careful to tighten the nuts on the turnbuckes, espescially after the first event. As I said,I've never had this happen before. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and other than tightening the nuts, any ideas on remedies?

Yes, this happened to me. I assume you didn't put in the cotter pins. Each turnbuckle should have 2 of these. If you look closely you'll see a hole where they go to the outside of the threads. I found out the importance of cotter pins when this happened to me. I thought I had broken a turnbuckle.

if you have locking nuts on both sides of the turnbuckle barrel, double check the nuts so that when you tighten the top one you do not actually loosen the bottom one.
