I Got the Engine (Honda 5 HP 4 stroke) Now some questions

Post by Eric »

I bit the bullet and replaced my troublesome Mariner with a Honda 5HP, 4-stroke. Last night I put the Engine in Allia (CD25) and couldn't get the engine tiller to fit under the traveller bridge. I could have sworn I read on here that others had been able to get the tiller in place, but I can't figure it out. Does the tiller have to be removed? If so, how do I do it?

Also, unlike my Mariner, the tiller doesn't go all the way back. That means it's always up to one degree or another. That means I can't close the engine locker when the engine is in the boat. I can't imagine this is how others have it configured, based on all the positive comments I've read about this engine. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Eric,
Check under the base of the tiller- near the motor head- there is a spring loaded pin that can be held back with one hand and with the other you can turn the tiller in a down position. The tiller will swing from vertical- straight up- to horizontal (normal position when motoring) to almost straight down. When slipping the motor into the well, push the spring loaded pin back and lower the tiller. The tiller, should slip in under your traveler and into the opening between motorwell and cockpit. Cover will close with the tiller in horizontal position- sticking out of motorwell opening into cockpit. The down side is you have to leave the board off that usually closes the cockpit off from motorwell. A minor trade-off IMHO. This is for a 5hp 2000 Honda. I don't know what the 2002's are like. Hopefully thaey are the same design.

Good luck, Bill

Eric, Please check out Bill's info asap and let me know. I have a new Nissan ordered, and I may cancel it if this works. I too, want the cover to close completely. Thanks chuck

Chuck, I had a 6hp 4stroke Nissan on Brigitta. The top of the engine cover held the hatch open about 1/2 inch... IF I had really wanted to keep the motor in the well all the time, I would have trimmed the transom the 1/2 inch I needed for clearance. (I had the transom replaced long ago with starboard.) Since I race and sail in a salty area, I never left the motor in the water long. Having the hatch not close was good incentive to leave the motor in the cabin, were it belonged! :-) (Great ballast but, Yes! quite nice to have when it's really needed.)
