CD26 Builders Plates - Any interest?

Post by Dennis Truett »

I just contacted Bristol Bronze about a Builders Plate for my CD26.
Roger replied that an original had not been made because there have been no requests. ( the mold costs them about $100) They have the art work and would invest the $100 if there was interest. If anyone is interested, please post a reply. I'm sure roger monitors this web site.

Dennis, I'm not sure what you're referring to. My CD26 has a bronze plate on the transom that shows the hull number, where the boat was made, etc. Is that what you're calling the "Builder's Plate"? If so, my CD26 has one, and I thought they were standard on all Cape Dories.

My CD26 plate is also bronze, but apparently they were also made of bronze colored plastic, perhaps in later years. There was a lengthy discussion of this in many months (years?) ago, try searching for more background. Many owners of high volume CDs got together to get the molds made. The low number of CD26s produced is perhaps the reason the CD26 mold wasn't created.

Dear Dennis,

As promised, now that there is some interest in a replacement Bronze Builder's Plate for the CD 26 I will start on the tooling. Due to the two week shut down of my suppliers in July these may not be ready until the end of July. We will, however, take orders for them before that. As with all the other CD Builder's Plates they will be $40.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.

For those that have not looked too closly at their Builder's Plates (this is the oval plate that contains the Cape Dory logo and the boat's hull number) most Cape Dory boats were built using plastic plates that were made to look like Bronze. A few boats were built with actual Bronze plates. I have talked to several owners that expressed suprise at finding that the plate that they thought to be Bronze was really plastic. Over time the plastic plates tend to deteriorate due to exposure to wind, weather, and the ultra violet rays of the sun. A plate made from real Bronze will last almost forever. (The Builder's Plate on my own boat from Herreshoff Mfg. Co. will be 82 years old in a few months and still looks fine.)
