My boy scout camp just received a donated typhoon from a very generous man. This boat is in beautiful condition, and came with everything that we would need to sail, maintain, or repair it. As the assistant waterfront director, I am very anxious to sail this boat with my merit badge classes. If anyone has any tips that i may find useful in making this experience for the kids the best that they have ever had...or knows of any quirks that this boat may have...please reply. I am a collegiate sailor with a lot of experience in dinghys, but this is one of my first big boat challenges. Our camp is located on a large, private mountain-top lake with great thermal winds that clock in everyday around noon time. I look forward to becoming a member of the Typhoon "family".

Re: welcome aboard!
Welcome Corey. You'll find that this is a great owners association and message board, with a lot of very useful information.
I've only had my Ty about a year, so am not a fountain of useful knowledge yet, but I can relate some of my experiences and repeat some of what I've heard on this board as follows:
1) The Ty is a great sailing boat! Not fast in a light breeze, she really sets down and behaves as the wind picks up. Talk to Richard Crisler at crisler@mindspring.com regarding using a Ty to teach sailing. He uses one for his Basic Keelboat classes.
2) don't put too much weight off the back, meaning go with the lightest engine that you feel will move you sufficiently. I use an old Evinrude 4hp, but will probably scale back to 2hp when I have to replace it, in order to go 4 cycle without adding excessive weight.
3) Think about replacing the roller reefing with slab reefing, and adding a boom vang. I've done the former, still waiting to do the later.
4) Have fun sailing!!

Re: typhoon donation
That's really great...they should have a lot of fun....quirks, not really...well balanced...will find she will carry through tacking very nicely....smaller than the other CDs but has the same big boat handling qualities as her sisters....just enjoy....
