Maybe this question is too "conditions dependant" to approach with anything resembling an answer... but does anyone have an idea of what kind of MPG I might get out of a brand new- well running two-cylinder Nissan 9.8 -pushing a CD25? I only use the thing to get on and off the can and haven't really gotten any numbers to gauge this by... Just wondering if anyone has ever tried to sort something like this out...
Thanks,
Steve

MPG on an outboard?

Like an airplane, a boat's range (and MPG) is entirely dependant on the environment it's operating in at the time the measurement is taken. For boats and planes, MPG measurements must take the GROUNDSPEED of the vehicle into account, which can vary greatly depending on a combination of wind, current, and throttle. By the way, of equal or perhaps greater importance to range (and MPG) is ENDURANCE - if you know your boats endurance, you can use it's groundspeed to calculate range (and MPG). The best you can do at home is to calculate an average, then adjust it for prevailing conditions once you're on the water.

Re: MPG on an outboard?
As John mentioned conditions will always dictate.. I can tell you that through a 8 hour motor last year with no wind and flat seas on LI sound the trip from Noank CT to New Haven CT ( approx 43+ Nm )with a new Nissan 8 on my CD25 ran just about 8 gallons in 8 or so hours with an avg speed over ground of 5.3 kn. Caught both flood and ebb tides about equal times as I remember. A Gallon an hour might be as good a guess as any with out lots of cypherin'... and with all that hittin' your head in the cabin of the 25 who wants to be in there cypherin' anyway !

Re: MPG on an outboard?
Lots of variables, but I'd expect to burn a gallon an hour (if it's a 2-stroke). Considerable less if 4-stroke.
