Engine Oil Lines

Post by Warren Kaplan »

This is just something to think about when considering engine maintenance or dealing with engine problems. I mentioned that 2 weeks ago on SQN's shakedown cruise, that her YSM8 ruptured an oil line. It just corroded over its 22 year life and finally gave way. The yard mechanic replace it with a new oil line. He mentioned that when he was removing the old metal line it was so corroded that half of it stayed in place as he lifted it out. He replaced it and yesterday we took SQN out for another sail. We motored alot to get out and get back in. She performed better than she ever has in the 3 years I have this boat. She seemed to have much more power even at low revs. She ran much, much quieter than any of us (the sailing family) can remember. Less vibration too. I'm not suggesting that this little one lunger was transformed into a smooth running, vibration free powerhouse, but she ran a helluva lot better than I can ever remember. I mentioned it to the mechanic and he said, " I don't know but with all that corrosion in the line the engine may not have been getting all the oil she was suppose to be getting all along. I know that when I took the Mack Boring course, Larry Berlin, their diesel expert said that along with lubrication, engine oil is responsible for a large amount of engine cooling. Overly hot engines aren't at their best. If my engine's performance stays good thru the season, then I think the mechanic's explanation may have merit. If a corroded oil line can do this years before it ruptures to my engine, I imagine it can do it to yours. So check 'um if they are accessible on your model engine. Anyone else have any experience with corroded metal oil lines on their boats?
By the way, yesterday's sail was just about perfect!

Captain Kaplan,

I's doesn't care if your engine is so quiet that the Pirates can't hear it. You will still be overtaken on your Port Quarter and boarded by the Pirate Captain during this summers RACE! What you will hear no doubt is the blood curdling chant of the Pirates aboard Hanalei as she bares down an ya! (Besides, engines are NOT allowed during any race, any time!!) New jib to arrive Wednseday next........be afraid Sir, be VERY afraid.........

Warren,

What line (pipe) is that exactly? Is it inside the engine or outside, mounted on the block?

Sounds like a nice inexpensive engine tune up!

Jeff,
It was the outside metal line that runs on top of the block. If you have the Yanmar Service manual its the picture is on page 6-1.

You'd think from all that bravado that the "Tiger Woods" of the sailing fleet was calling the shots aboard Hanalei! I don't know what is gonna' be worse. Listening to you if you win again...or...listening to you when you probably lose!! Maybe then I'll long for my one time noisy engine!

a goin' to hate it if per chance Hanalei again crosses the finish line 15 MINUTES ! ! ! ahead of the fleet as she did in glorius style last year. Why, that was greater than the Battle of the Nile, in which Hanalei was a marked contestant! OK, I promise(can you believe a Pirate?)that I will NOT bust ya all too bad if I win again! ! ! Yeh, right! ! !
