CD30 & Fresh Water Cooling System -

Post by Pat »

I'd be interested to hear from those of you who have original or upgraded fresh water cooling systems for your engines.
In my current system, the raw water is pumped through the heat exchanger via a small pump driven by a pulley and belt. The access to this particular part of the engine (by the thermostat) is particulary difficult - to put it mildly. Access to the small impeller in this pump requires pulling the whole pump out (no small job) and then re-installing. All this can be done (over a week end) at the dock, but I can't imagine having to make this repair under way if needed or even anchored somewhere - it's just too difficult to get at the thing!
So I'm looking for better systems. The heat exchanger could probably remain where it's at, but I would love to move the pump to a more "servicable" location. An electric pump perhaps? - I don't know.......
What have the rest of you done?

Thanks,

Pat

Pat,
Hanalei, CD-30, has a Universal 18, 14hp diesel. I suspect your engine is different as access to Hanalei's raw water pump is right in front and out in the open. Maybe no one answered as they didn't know what engine you have. I don't know about an electric raw water pump. I would think it would need a pretty high flow, read that heavy draw on the battery even while running. Don't know what to tell you.
