Draining a Racor Turbine 500 filter

Post by bobm »

This is a nice filter-its the new version with a big bowl and a metal shield/cup under it...I did not notice a drain plug under the bowl but maybe I missed it-there was a 9/16" nut under the bowl that attached the metal shield/cup to the bowl-I unscrewed that nut and the whole bowl started gushing out...anyone have one of these new filters with the bowl/metal shield -my boat is 2 hours away and this is bugging me crazy-is there a smaller drain pulg that screws into the nut and IF NOT-how the hell do I drain this without making a huge mess..

Bob,
Mine does not have a drain either. I put a small, stiff piece of tubing down through the grating and siphon it out. I then remove the bowl to clean it. If you shut off the fuel at the tank and re-fill the filter to the very top prior to putting the lid back on you may get away without having to bleed the engine.

Have You Looked at My Posting On This?

Check out the drawing in my earlier posting. There is a drain, it is just hard to find in the older model. It is a plug in the larger nut that holds the glass bowl up.

Take a look.

Ken,
I did check out the drawing. I have had my unit apart 3 or 4 times since owning the boat. That plug in the bottom of my unit is solid, with no inner plug. I talked to the Racor rep at the boat show one year. I might just have to buy a new plug. If I do I will get the valve in the bottom and hook a hose to it so I can drain the contents into a container.

thanks for the feedback.

Matt
