Considering the receint explosion of changes in chartploting capabilities, coupled with the anticipation of the new NOAA electronic charts promised in vector format, does anyone have an opinion as to what GPS-Chartplotter combination "today's prudent mariner" would specify given a $500 +/- budget?

Everybody has their favorite brands for various reasons. I myself say go with a PC (below decks). See previous discussions in the archives of this board.
Other than the PC my leaning would be the Navman 5500 units. From my observations nothing in that price range even comes remotely close from other manufacturers. Check one out, believe me you won't be disappointed in it.

Navman 5500
Here's a picture of it. Beautiful color screen and lots of excellent features and they sell for about $590.
Hope this is of help.
