Fuel gauge

Post by Lee Schacter, MD »

I recently purchased a 1983 CD 25D. I moved from South of Annapolis to the Eastern Shore, about 35 miles all under power. The tank was filled on departure and would accept < 2 gallons on arrival. I realize the Yanmar diesel is ecconomic but this seems a bit much. Is there any way to determine the amount of fuel in the tank? There seems to be no fuel gauge and a dip stick can't be used due to the location of tank and filler.

Thanks for any suggestions.

My 36 CD would get about 28 miles on 2 gallons, so I wouldn't be suprised if you are fairly accurate about the fuel consuption.

The single cylinder (8hp) Yanmar on TIA MARI (1979 CD27') used about a quart an hour at nearly full throttle. There should be an iformational plate on the top of the tank indicating capacity.

Hope this helps.

Lee,

We have also have a 1983 CD25D. I've heard that the Yanmar 1GM in a 25D gets about 250 miles to the tank. I think the tank holds about 12 gallons of fuel. At 35 miles and two gallons of diesel that's approximately 210 miles on a tank. Sounds about right to me.

Since your boat was built the same year as mine, you probably have the same fuel tank hardware. My tank has a fuel guage, but it's very difficult to look at. Open the port side cockpit locker and there's a removable wood access panel. If you take the panel off you can access the fuel tank, stuffing box, and the back of the engine. On Cricket, the fuel tank has a small fuel gauge on the top of the tank. The wood access panel has a small hole cut in it so you can see the gauge without removing the panel.

Hope this helps!
