Rent a Truck?

Post by craig »

Has anyone ever attempted to rent some sort of truck from uhaul or ryder or some other company to tow a boat? Four yrs ago we bought our 34 hunter in annapolis and had her trucked to minnesota for 3k. Dont care to do that anymore. The problem is there is no supply of boats here in the middle of the country. 90% are on the coast. If I find a nice 25 cd somewhere not around here is there a way for me to fly there and rent some sort of vehicle to pull a 4000lb boat home to minnesota. Anybody done that? I will call uhaul and ryder if i get no response. thanks. craig One of the nicest 1987 34 hunters in the country is for sale here if anyone is sick of their cd.

Uhaul has no problem if the boat and trailer are less than 5000lb. I have a CD25D and it was a problem because the combined trailer boat weight is somewhere around 7000lb.

I called every car and truck rental place I could find and noone could help me.

Fortunately I have a few friends with really big trucks.

Craig,
I learned many years ago while in the army, to never, never ask questions. Just go ahead and do what needs to be done and if anyone complains, plead ignorance and innocence.
I know that if you rent a big enough truck (as for moving 3 or 4 bedrooms of furniture) you shouldn't have any trouble starting, manoeuvering, or stopping. Be sure to check the ball size on the truck before you rent it, hook up good safety chains, and proper lights and don't get in a hurry.
Finally, never volunteer any information. If asked questions, answer truthfully OR plead ignorance.
Happy trilering!

Craig. Three years ago I was in the same boat you are in... I had to say it!! No Typhoons for sale in the Mid West. I ended up picking one up out of TX. Looked at renting truck, ended up using friends 3/4 ton Chev. pick up. Payed him $800.00 for his truck and his time. I paid for the gas, food and lodging (1 night).
Left Minnesota Friday afternoon - 24 hours to Galviston Bay TX, sailed boat Saturday night, Sunday serviced trailer and pulled boat,
left for Minnesoat around 1500 hours. Back home Monday around 1700.

Devious thought....If the rental does not come with a hitch have one installed.. Sears...Walmart???
Good luck

I agree with the advice that it's better to ask for forgiveness (after you've accomplished what you set out to do) than to ask for permission. I've seen the larger U-Hauls dragging automobiles, so I'd just do it. When I've rented a truck to haul Pokey, all I ever asked was, "Does it have a hitch?" They never asked me what for.

Does anyone know if there are provisions against overloading in the rental agreement or in standard insurance policies that we should be concerned about?

Good luck,

Read the Fine Print

I think if you read the fine print you might wince. If the tranny gave up while you were using the truck as an unauthorized tow vehicle, who do you think would pay for the rebuild? How would you get the trailer and boat away from the truck so they wouldn't be so suspicious?

Just a thought.

When I checked with the local Uhaul for the purpose of towing our 25d found out all their trucks had 2" balls welded to the bumpers. To small for my trailer hitch.Thank goodness for friends with big trucks.

Mike,

I am curious about your hitch. Although balls are often interchangeable, class III hitches are spec'd to use 1 7/8" balls and I beleive Class I & II both use 2" balls, the rationale being that the heavier load won't fit on the less capable hitch. I guess U-Haul is trying to limit the load you might haul while they aren't watching.

Your trailer must have a different hitch than those above; what is it?

I am sure you are right about Uhaul wanting to limit capacity. My trailer was manufacutrued by King trailers near Seattle. The capacity of the trailer, if I remember correctly, is 7200 pounds and the surge brake Actuater is rated at 10,000 pounds. The ball size required for this specific actuator is 2 5/16 ". The tongue weight for our 25d is about 650 lbs. which is aprox. 10% of her actual weight. Everything on the trailer is heavy duty including the tires, torsion suspenson and 4 sets of disk brakes. The trailer cost a small fortune however.
