What the heck is that on my sail

Post by Ed Killian »

Still have the original sails on our '78 CD25, Carolyn, and they are in pretty good shape. Right above the clew on both the main and genoa are a series of 3 gromets, maybe an inch apart. There is a light cord strung through them and on the main there is a small plastic jam cleat.
I'm "clewless!" Looks like something that can tighten up the sail's leech. When and why would I do that?

Great day on Canandaigua lake today! Sunny and cool with west wind about 15 to 20. This was our 3rd sail on our new old boat. We are learning alot about her and there is a lot of smiling going on...

Ed:
The line you are referring to on the leech of both sails is a leech-line. It controls the shape of the leech on the sails. The cord is used to eliminate leech flutter if the leech is too loose or to take out leech cupping if the leech is too tight.

Your sails are almost 25 years old. They may not respond to adjustments to the leechline. The line itself may have shrunk and, thus, is too short to adjust. Or the sailcloth has stretched too much to allow adjustment.

The ideal leech should neither cup nor flutter but is fair as a foil should be so as not to disturb airflow.

Ed,
Thanks - I'll play with them a bit. The main looked fine, but we did have some flutter in the genny. Hope this stretch of good weather gets you unlocked soon. Wife and I enjoyed the poem...
