Quiet Engines?..2GM20 Or Any Others..?

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Hi again,
This is an offshoot of the "Gremlins Climb Aboard" previous posting. SQN needs a new engine and now. I've read all the postings on the Yanmar 2GM20 as I had planned on getting one next year. For those of you that have one on your boat, especially CD27s, is it quiet? My old YSM-8 really made motoring miserable with the noise and vibration. My wife is all for repowering but she insists on a quiet engine and I have to say that if I am going to the trouble and expense of doing this, I agree with her 100%. My brother-in-law has one of the Volvo engines on his Frances 26 and I swear you don't even know its on! I mean that literally. So I know its possible to do. So, I'd be interested in the opinions of anyone with ANY engines in the 18 HP range on boats of the approximate size of the CD27.

Thanks

Warren,

You are certainly faced with a big decision. I am biased toward Volvo. I have owned a Yanmar in the past and compared to a Volvo they are noisey and rough. They are a spin off from tractor engines. I've had customers in past years with Yanmars and none were especially quiet or smooth. I think Westerbekes are a smoother engine than a Yanmar. Nannidiesels (Mercedes), the name says a lot, run well also. Volvos have the huge advantage of the big heavy flywheel which really makes a difference in smoothness of that engine. When the MD7B engine runs in our CD30 it is so smooth and quiet you would think it is a gas engine and that is with the basic generic Volvo motor mounts in place. Vetus makes a wonderful "hydro damper" motor mount that would even help more on a small diesel.

Anyway.....my vote is for Volvo.

Good luck.

Warren,

I have the 2GM20(F). It is not a boneshaker, but it's probably not the quietest either. It has a tremendous reputation for reliability and since Yanmar has saturated the market parts are plentiful and not that expensive. The engine will push you through strong headwinds, chop and currents. Just ask our Fleet Captain--last year the fleet motorsailed (mostly motored) all the way from Shelter Is. to Watch Hill and I was right behind Machts Nichts (CD30 MK II) the whole way. Capt Heintz couldn't believe a "little" 27 kept up with him under power. (I usually motor at 5.5 knots a 2700 rpm, 6 knots at 3000 rpm). I think LIYS is a Yanmar repower specialist, I don't think they're too far from you.

I have heard that Westerbekes are probably the quietest marine diesel. I was on a boat with a Westerbeke once and it indeed was quiet.

If you want to listen to my Yanmar come on up to Croton and I'll be glad to "audition" it for you. And you can inspect a completed installation in the same model boat. Contact me to arrange a sail!
