I am considering purchasing a 25D or 28 sailboat (CD) and am concerned whether I have sufficient strength to hoist the sails and steer the tiller. (I am an older light weight woman) Could I join someone on their boat for a demonstration? I live in Tallahassee, FL (panhandle) and would drive several states. Thanks and help!!!

Yes, you would be able to handle. All boats can be rig'd for the crews strengths/weakness.
Would be more then happy to take you out on our CD28, providing we haven"t sold it, but could easily show you on our 31 if the 28 is no longer available.
We are in Atlanta.

Re: CD 25D or 28 sail
Susan,
I don't know how old "older" is but I'm a 130 lb 45-year old woman and I can easily hoist the sails on our Cape Dory 32. Her sails are much larger than those on a CD25 or 28. As long as you keep the winches properly maintained (they should be cleaned and greased yearly) and the sheaves at the top of the mast cleaned and lubricated (do this in the Spring before stepping the mast) you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: CD 25D or 28 sail
Either choice should be a good one. I agree with the advice about being able to rig the boat to accomodate strengths or weaknesses. I had a CD 27 and it was a great boat to sail. Raising the main required the winch towards the end of raising it but it wasn't a real problem. I am 44 but in fair shape and a bit bigger than you. My wife didn't fair as well and never felt comfortable sailing the 27. Now, we have a 25D and it is the perfect size. Very easy to single hand, heavy enough to take the weather when all others are at the dock, and everything is manageable. We have a roller furler on the bow and it makes things very easy. The main has two reef points and if we think we will need a reef, we do it at the dock and can shake it out easily as the breeze gets stronger. I can reef it at sea but it is just easier to enjoy the sail sometimes and sacrifice speed for comfort of passengers. The tiller has a good mechanical advantage aboard the 25D and the boat balances well. I have been aboard the 27 in a storm when I was worn slap out by seesawing on the tiller. It was more a problem with inexperience and sail trim though.
Either would do great. If you want to go for a sail, we are in Charleston.

We have a CD 28 and are three hours south of you on U.S. 19 in Crystal River. The main is a little tough to hoist, the winch must supplement the last foot or so. I neglected to clean and lube the sheaves at the top of the mast last winter prior to launching so that may account for some of the difficulty. The tiller is very light in most conditions.
My wife and I would be happy to give you a test sail at your convenience.

I often single hand our CD 25D, and if the lines were led to the
cockpit it would be even easier. It's for sale, in RI. check out
listing as of 6/4/02.
