CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
When I bought my 1982 CD-33 it came with a Universal Diesel Model #30, a Hurth 100 transmission and the muffler sitting on a metal platform attached by a brackett bolted to the side of the tranny. Is this the normal set-up for other CD-33's? Does anybody have a different set-up for the muffler? The transmission people advise me not to bolt the muffler and platform to the tranny... so where can I reposition that muffler? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

Re: CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Zeida, I moved mine years ago. In my case the vibration of the engine had caused the nut to come loose on the muffler platform and the platform had chewed up the threads on the motor mount. Not only that the muffler platform was rubbing on the hull now and had eaten a hole halfway through the hull. I made a little wooden platform and mounted the muffler on that completely away from the engine. The muffler can go anywhere and doesn't have to be bolted to the engine.
I have a 31 so my configuration is probably different, but just look around and find a place where it will work and move it over there. The idea of putting a platform on a bolt with one nut is a poor design in my view. If the nut loosens, the platform will swing back and forth which it wouldn't do with two bolts. I have the model 25 engine so it's all a little different, but your concept is correct.

Re: CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Zeida - From memory, I believe my muffler mount is actually mounted to one of the bell housing bolts and not to the tranny in my 330. I have the same M-30 Westerbeke and replaced the tranny about 3 years ago. I had to pull the tranny and bell housing (required jacking the motor up 6 inches) and recall the muffler being in the way when I pulleed the housing.

Tom: I have exactly (word by word) the same problem you describe with your muffler. I will be building my separate little platform too and reposition this muffler. I have been dealing with this problem far too long. Thanks all for your helpful comments.

Re: CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Hi Zeida:
I have a 30 MkII and a similar problem. The muffler was suspended by the hose from the water injection pipe. The muffler was rubbing a hole in the hull and making a ratteling sound at idle. I have since shortened the hose and relieved the problem somewhat. After discussion with the Westerbeke dealer here the best solution seems for me to glass in a small wood shelf above and behind the stuffing box and bolt down the muffler to it. I would need longer exhaust hose and with a slight turn in it there should be enough flex. I am thinking about using rubber isolation bolts for the muffler attachment to the shelf. Have not done the work yet. Hope this helps.

Re: CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Probably the best thing to do as was mentioned in a previous post is to glass in a small shelve just above and a little aft of the stuffing box and install a new muffler there. It will require some additional modifications like - you may need a new exhaust elbow and some exhaust hose, but in the end this will be a cleaner installation.

Re: CD-33 Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Hi Boyd: I am definitely building a small separate platform for the muffler and hope to have it in place by the weekend. I will take photos of what I will be doing and will send them to you.
1/2" marine plywood, with 3 coats of epoxy and a final coat of varnish to seal the wood will be the platform, with built-in bolts so I can just drop the muffler over them and with butterfly nuts hold it in place. I will need to extend the exhaust hoses just a tiny bit. Platform legs will be glassed to the hull. Such a much better arrangement than what is there now. Thanks for the input. Everybody has recommended the same, so that's the way to go.
I'll be in touch.

Re: CD-30 MKII Owners - NEED YOUR HELP
Hi
looking at a Cape Dory 30 MKII 1987 with a Westerbeke 30B 2005,what called my attention was trying to find the stuffing box, eventually realized is Under the muffler!,that makes almost impossible to check and service it,I believe is a dripless, cannot tell for sure as is so hidden.
Is this a normal install/placement? for this CD model? or what can be done?
thank you very much.
