Teak laminate--film removal

Post by Bill Armstrong »

Hi all...all of my teak laminate(esp. main cabin) has spots and areas where it is filmy with some kind of finisher. About 50% of the bulkheads and locker covers. Is there a way to get the remaining film off without damage to the laminate? Is it varnish? Need help to make the interior look pleasant...Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill..

This is a tough one without seeing the stuff in person. You didnt say which boat you have or what material the "teak laminate" is.

If the laminate underneath is real Formica or similar almost nothing except paint remover will harm it. If someone varnished over Formica then getting it off should be easy since none of the paint products really stick well to it. Ordinary solvents should do the job (mineral spirits, acetone, laquer thinner) Are you sure its not the top layer of laminate that is degrading?

If it is teak wood veneer? If so then this is a whole different matter. Washing first with a water, bleach, TSP solution should remove all oil products and will not hurt healthy varnish.

As always test first on a nonconspicious spot.

Let me know what you have I am courious. PO's do some strange stuff.
