Derogatory Names for Vessel
Looking for derogatory names for a boat. ie. How would you describe an ugly vessel, Is Tramp Steamer correct, how about Scow? I need to fill in this line: "One skippers ___________ is another's Dream Yacht"
of course I'm not refering to Cape Dories, or being malicious to anyone or boat in particular

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
Whoa....You obviously have never seen inland lakes racing scows. An A boat is one of the most beautiful sights to behold...Dan wrote: how about Scow?

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
For the purposes of the line you need to fill in I'd say "Stink Pot."
While normally used in a derogatory manner against powerboats, this also has a nice rhyme to it.

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
"Tramp" refers to unscheduled service (as opposed to liner service), not appearance. But all the new Sea Ray's in the marina across the river from me certainly qualify for whatever you come up with. They're butt ugly.

My personal favorite - "Barnacle Laden Bathtub"
How about - "Floating Nightmare", “Marine Wreckage”.

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
Pardon the profaniaty, but I have always been fond of the term "shitbox".
Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
"Tramp" is descriptive, as already mentioned.
"Scow" is only derogatory if it's followed by "garbage."
"Tub" is, I suggest, universally derogatory. Not to change the quote, but "One skipper's tub is another's treasure."

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
In my youth at the Jersey shore, the oldsters used to refer to all fiberglass boats as "Clorox bottles." Those guys are mostly dead now, and these days it seems this sobriquet is applied only to truly ugly fiberglass boats, thus excluding Cape Dorys.
No doubt the British navy had many colorful expressions. Let's hear from the Nautical Traditions Officer.

Re: Derogatory Names for Vessel
I know that my boat, Sine Qua Non, is alive and I talk to it often. Methinks I am not alone in this although many sailors won't admit it. When I see a vessel that is not pleasing to the eye, or is neglected, call me nuts but I feel sorry for it. Like all living things it cannot pick its parents (designers) or its caretakers. I never could add insult to injury by heaping a derogatory name on the poor boat. Yep! I should be committed to the nearest mental health facility but that's how I feel.
