Hello to all
My lovely Bride and I are planning a trip to the North Carolina coast the week following the 4th (probably be there between 9-12 July). We are scoping out places where we might consider retiring in a few years and the NC mountains and sea coast are sounding more and more like a good compromise. (Sailing is not my lovely brides most favorite past time but bless her heart she tries. She wants mountains, I want saltwater). I want to visit Oriental and am open to other suggestions. AND ofcourse if invited to crew for some of the fine folks in NC we would be delighted to do so...
Thanks for any suggestions

Re: North Carolina Visit - Consider Southport
Bill & Heather Ann....You might want to consider Southport, NC, which is the farthest point south on the NC coastline. From the marina in Southport you're in the Cape Fear River in about 3-5 minutes and in the Atlantic in about 20-30, depending on the tide. To a certain degree I regret that it is becoming more of a retirement community as apposed to the quaint fishing village of its roots. But such is life. Having said that, there are all manner of homes (little ranch houses to historical district homes to modern mansions) as well as several very well known gated communities outside Southport w/major golf courses (or so they tell me as I'd rather sail) along w/tennis courts. You're about half way between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington (45-60 minutes away) and right on the intracoastal waterway. Within 2 slips of our CD30 are 2 CD25 and a 22 SeaSprite (Alberg design).....your vessel will fit in fine. As for a sail, oh hurt me....give me another reason to drag myself onto the boat and head out to the Atlantic Ocean, play in the Cape Fear River, or just cruise up and down the ICW!!!! If you were to come the week of the 4th you'd find that Southport is the 4th of July capital for the state of NC and about 40-60,000 people descend on our little village for the street fairs, parade, and fireworks display, not to mention the Commodore's 4th of July Regatta!!! At this time I plan on being in town and with sufficient advanced notice my 1st Mate/Partner will come over from Columbia to join you. Feel free to e-mail me at home.

I had a long message all set to go, but Chris seems to have pre-empted mine.
Check out the links below for more info. I'll be happy to share some of my views, but I guess we'll do it off line to keep my blood pressure lower.

As some of you have found out, my email address doesn't work if you include the NO SPAM part. I hope that the purveyors of SPAM are also getting bounced emails.
Blood pressure issue has nothing to do with you, only my inability to write a quick posting to the board. There is a race condition in the posting logic that has something to do with two of us posting at once and my trying to edit a message I am previewing. I think Walt knows the problem and that it would take a tremendous amount of work to fix it.
Thus, once again, I am kicking myself for not making a copy of my long posting, before I tried to preview it. I will do that this time.

Re: North Carolina Visit
Bill,
I have kept a boat a South Port and enjoyed it very much. There are many other places in NC or SC that may offer both of you an enjoyable place to visit or settle.
I lived on Ocracoke Island for several years and it is quite a unique sort of place. Most of the Outer Banks areas are great to visit. The living part can be isolated but that is a good thing. During summers, the population on Ocracoke changes from 700 (wintertime) to in the thousands. The character of the whole place is very different and I think that this is probably true for most tourist oriented areas.
Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach are also good areas, Wrightsville being above Cape Fear and nearer a stable inlet. Morehead and Beaufort, NC are nice and the ocean is right at hand. Beaufort is a little less commercial craft oriented.
On the Sounds of NC, there are innumberable places to visit and stay. The greatest thing is that there is still affordable property. The Oriental area is very accomodating and has access to almost anything you need with good sailing waters in the Neuse and the Sounds. New Bern is on up the Neuse and the sailing is not as accessible but can be had with a little distance from the harbor. Bath is very nice as a harbor but was hit by one of the hurricanes a few years back and I haven't visited since to see how things have shaped up. Washington and Belhaven offer good access to bigger water and have good facilities. Manteo is a nice place to visit but too busy for me in summer.
All areas on the Sounds have very little lunar tide but the wind can really change the water levels if it blows hard from either direction.
In SC, I am now keeping a boat in Charleston and love the laid back atmosphere but access to anything you want. The ocean and harbor sailing is good also providing a few day trips to nearby inlets, north and south. Other areas of interest are the Beaufort, SC area bordering Port Royal Sound, and the Hilton Head area almost to Georgia but having access to Calibogue Sound and the Savanah River entrance.
SC and NC offer easy access to the mountains and coasts. I live in Columbia and am three hours from the mountain lakes and hiking. I am also an hour and a half from Charleston so that yesterday's head down for the day from Columbia only meant an hour and a half drive. You really get the best of both worlds. We do have a sizeable lake here but I prefer the CD25D that I have staying in salt water, thus my decision to stay in Charleston. The lake levels will be dropped for two years for dam repairs so it will not be the most desirable situation for that amount of time.
If you are down in SC and the Charleston area, I would be happy to take you out in that I have summers off so could be down any time. I know that I have a group sailing on the 6th-8th but could go any other time around there.
Happy sailing and hope you have a good visit where ever you decide to go.
