Captains Commanding
New England Fleet,
This Captain was aboard the sailing vessel Evening Light this Saturday afternoon last. Captains, ya gotta see this vessel! Different shear, but MUCH more space below for stowin' stuff! Heavy stout spar, must be able to carry a LOT of sail! Broad in the beam, but then any fine vessel(or fine lass) called "she" is..... Now, it remains to be seen how this vessel performs on a bowlin', but I am sure Hanalei and Evening Light will "have at it" long before the RACE ! ! ! Captain of Evenin' Light will be starting more than water over the side during the RACE!!!! (Ah, there goes the stove, there goes the Bruce, there goes the CGR, there goes the 1st. Mate, there goes the anchor chain! ! !) Mark my words...........I remain Sirs, your most HUMBLE servant,...........

Re: Ya gotta see this boat ! ! ! !
I've also seen Evening Light and can also confirm that she's a real beaut. She not broad in the beam though. A 33-footer with a beam of only 10'3" is really pretty narrow when compared to the new boat competition these days. Compare that to the Beneteau 331 with a 11'2" beam, Hunter 326 with a 10'10" beam, Hans Christian 33 with a 11'8" beam, Island Packet 32 with a 11'9" beam, Sabre 32 with a beam of 10'6, Bavaria 32 with a beam of 10'9", and the list goes on.

Re: Sure and ain't ya right.......
Captain Monaghan,
Sure and ain't ya right about the "modern" fat little vessels, but I was comparing Evening Lights BROAD beam to that svelte, petite line with a fine entry, of a vessel like Hanalei with a nine foot!!!beam!!! Ten foot three inches in the beam! My, that critter's got 15 inches on Hanalei! But, admittedly, ya can stow more stuff aboard her than you can on Hanalei. You know, heavy stuff, like an extra stove, extra all chain (200') anchor rode, and of course a brandy new extra CQR of maybe 45 pounds(hey, how about a microwave oven and a large screen TV?)! Also, the Captain of Evening Light is already talking about installing an extra water tank or two. AND, from his story, maybe he would want to install a 200 gallon spare diesel fuel tank!!! No more 5 gallon jerry cans for her!!!
But, all kidding aside, she is a impressive vessel, can't wait to see how she handles the wind......

svelte, petite, with a fine entry and Number ONE ! ! !
New jib to be ordered tomorrow from Mack Sails in Fort Lauderdale. Oh, by the way, Hanalei was at sea Saturday PM last. 15 knot sustained winds, puffs to 25. 6.8 knots with a single reef in the main, broad reaching, and no other flags flying! This vessel is FAST ! ! ! And, I haven't yet learned all there is to know about this new mains'l!

Dave,
Speaking of mainsails, I picked up my new mainsail on Saturday. The new tanbark sail is BEAUTIFUL with a capital "B". It's darker than the other two sails -- of course they're old and faded. But they will complement each other well.
