Restepping the mast

Restepping the mast
Looking at the oxidation on my mast step last night and was wondering if people put any lube on the step or on the inside wall of the mast prior to restepping.
My guess is it's unnecessary and would probably make a mess as it wheeps out during the season.

Are you talking about corrosion on the step? You want to take care of that before you step the mast. Get some metal cleaner and brush it on to get rid of the corrosion. You don't have to leave it a long time. Rinse it off and then paint the area (better, the whole step, its so small) with something like zinc chromate paint or rustoleum. That's what I had to do this year. I do believe that if the mast doesn't just slip onto the step without forcing it, some form of lubrication is in order. I think they did that with my mast 2 years ago but I'm not sure.

Re: Don't forget..........
Captain,
to place a bright penny in the step before you step the mast. Hanalei has the SAME penny she had last year(and in fact since she was launched as "Hanalei", just to continue her good luck, ......FWIW......

Re: Don't forget..........
If you ever are faced with changing the name of a boat, it can be critical that the old name be retained and kept on board. The mast step is a respectable storage spot.

Re: Restepping the mast
Good lubricants / protectants for this application would be "Lanocote" (grease consistency) marketed by Forespar available through West. Spread it on the step and inside the mast wall and then remove the excess. In lieu of Lanocote you can use anhydrous lanolin available from some pharmacies, use the same way as the Lanocote. Another excellent protectant is Corrosion X (CX for short). It is a thin product and is available in regular duty in the red can or as a heavy duty formula in the green can. Spray it on and lightly wipe off the excess. These two products have proven to be very effective over the years.

Penny?
Penny? Open up the purse strings peg leg and put a nice silver dollar on that mast step.
Thanks for the advice all.

Re: Clear weep hole...
Naw, shouldn't have to coat the step with anything, just assure that the weep hole is clear so that water doesn't set in the step and ya should be done............
