Hi Dan
We installed a Honda 8HP 4 stroke into our CD25 5 years ago. We are very happy with the installation.

Fit is vey tight. You will also probably find that actual dimensions from another boat might be a trap! During the rebuild, we found that the boat is not symetrical. There are significant differences side to side. I would bet that different boats are also a bit different. (We found out the hard way that somthing made to fit port would not fit starboard. As much as 3/4" difference.) What we did is to take out the old motor mount so we could lower the engine into the well position it and support it there. We rigged up a wooden frame. With the engine in the well you can see what will be needed to support it. Make up a trial motor mount out of scrap wood and try fitting the engine to it. We got it OK on the second "tweeking" of the dummy mount. We then copied it for the permenent mount. The control handle and shifter would not clear the drop board tracks on our boat so we made new ones fixed to the outside of the well. We also moved the traveler track at this time to fit a better Harken system, I don't recall if this made the Honda installation harder or not.
I found out after some use that it would have been better if I had located the engine a little more forward. Although the engine fit fine normally, when under a lot of power the engine "rocks" rearward on the soft Honda mounts due to the prop thrust. I have fitted a bit of soft hose over the sharp lip on the rear of the engine to protect the 'glass of the well.
We cruise the boat so we have fitted two 6 gal. tanks with a selector valve. This will provide about 24 hours of motoring @ 5.3 knots.
We also fitted the engine exhaust bypass with a hose to get the fumes out of the well. No problem running with the cover down now.
The control handle must be removed to lift the engine out but this takes only a couple of minutes.
Jim

I put a Nissan 6 hp 4-stroke on Brigitta and was quite happy. Since I could sail in and out of the marina, it spent most of the time on the cabin sole. When needed, it was very easy to put in or take out as it only weighed about 60 pounds. Living just of the Gulf of Mexico, an outboard "lasts" much longer being out of the water when not in use. As for the power, 6hp would move her very nicely in average weather. After one race we had 24 to 28 knots and 3 to 4 ft chop on our nose and she still managed to do 3.5 over ground!

I also run an 8hp with two 6 gallon tanks on my CD25. Unlike Jim's, mine is a 2 cycle motor. For comparison, my two cycle will go no more than 10 hours @ 5knots on the same amount of fuel - 50 miles tops.

I vote for the 4 cycle!

Yamaha has just introduced an 8HP 4 stroke twin that is much smaller than the Honda. It will fit into the well on my old #21 boat, with the rear lower plastic cover removed (decorative item). It is available in 3 shaft lengths and weighs quite a bit less than the Honda. The only "fit" problem is the price of a new motor won't "fit" into my paycheck!
