Cockpit seating on CD 30 Behind wheel

Post by scott »

On many photos of CD 30's I have noticed a seat for the helmsman behind the wheel and in some cases elevated so the captain can see. Does anyone have an idea where I might get one?

Or if anyone has spec's on one they have built, I would love to see them and hear how it has worked out.

I made a pattern seat from plywood with a stiffening cross bar under it, just to see how it worked. It was flat, and curved at the front edge to follow the back edge. It sits on tangs welded to the centre rail of the pushpit.
The seat was so good that the pattern stayed for 3 years. Recently it started to delaminate so now I will get the boat builder to make me the real thing out of slatted teak.
I can photograph it and send you the digital pix if you like.

Scott,
I have one that is 90% complete that I made this Winter from 5/4 pine stairtread material. The hard part was getting the board the exact right length so that it would slide back away from the wheel to allow the helmsman to also steer standing up, but not so far away that you have to "reach" while sitting and steering. I started long and kept taking a 1/4" off until I had it just right. I router put a bull nose on all of the edges. I am currently using a 5 1/2" cushion on top of the new seat to provide for proper elevation while sitting down and driving. I am contemplating having a full length cushion made that will snap under the seat. I think that is the way to go. I tried the new seat yesterday for the first time with the temporary cushion, and WOW, what a treat!
Make a template from cheap plywood or foamboard and take it from there. I envision the new seat being stored under one of the settee cushions in the cabin. Could not be simpler!
