Hobbs Meter - MD7A

Post by Kevin LeMans »

Anybody know how a Hobbs meter should be connected (wired) on a CD30/MD7A? Mine currently only has a single black wire connected, but there is also an unconnected blue wire coming from the ignition switch in the instrument pod.... Yes I have a copy of the wiring diagram but it doesn't show a Hobbs meter. Thanks in advance.

Kevin,

The Hobbs Meter counts time when 12vdc is connected to it's inputs, so you want a switched 12vdc source that would be on when the engine is running, or asked to run. The connection to the ignition key is just such a connection I believe.
Do you have a voltmeter? They are really handy to have, and can be a great trouble shooting tool on board. Radio Shack has a cheapy version that would work fine for you. What you want to look at is to see if there is voltage between that Blue wire and the other terminal (black wire) on the hobbs meter when the ignition key is turned on. Also, that the voltage is gone when the switch is off. If you confirm this, then connect that wire to the Hobbs Meter + input. The other Hobbs Meter connection is ground of course.

I believe that meter should be connected as blue to continuous ignition hot and black would be your ground.
