refinishing teak with Cetol

Post by David Spaulding »

There seems to be a lot of questions about Cetol lately and that is very timely for my purposes. Last year (my first year of boat ownership) I used Cetol on my Ty Weekender's teak with very good results. This year I just want to "refresh" the finish.

What is the best way of freshening up the finish? Should I clean and then sand and then apply a coat or two? or is sanding even necessary? What would be a good clearner to use? OR, is it necessary to take the finish down to bare wood again?

Thanks in advance.

A good scrub is usually all that is required before adding a coat or two over a good base. If we had to sand Cetol down to bare wood each spring (it's not a fun job) no one would use it.

I generally use a 15% bleach-water mix witha bit of liquid detergent for the scrub down. Works fine.

Thanks, Mitch. I was hoping that would be the case. I'm shooting for a much earlier launch this season!
