After 18 years, I finally bought one!!!

I saw my first Cape Dory at a boat show in Alameda, CA in 1984. Loved the simple lines and quality, and decided I had to have one...well eighteen years later, I finally got it done. I acquired a CD28, 1987 (I believe it was the second to last one built), from the original owner, who has done a fantastic job of maintaining her. Just got back from a day trip up to Wisconsin to pack it up for the long truck ride down to Dallas, TX. If all goes according to plan, she should be at her new home on Wednesday of this week!! Lots to learn, lots to do (including getting my three wife, and three boys 6, 12, 13 into sailing school.
I've been monitoring this board for over a year, and suspect that as a first time boat owner, I will yet another newbie hoping to tap in to the knowledge and experience of the board.

Congratulations on your first Cape Dory. I was in love with them from the first time I saw an early 10 back on Long Pond in Easton, MA. That must have been in the mid-sixties when I was sailing my dad's canoe on a trip back there from AZ or TX. We sailed a lot of other boats before aquiring a 14 by chance a few years ago and now we also have a 36 in the fleet. They are wonderful boats; enjoy!

I guess that if I had three wives and a new Cape Dory, I would be pretty excited too! What did you do first? Sail or ...?
Nonetheless, I extend my hearty congratulations. My first CD is now two months old now and I'm looking forward to great adventures with her. I share your excitement!

Typically the admiration period required is two decades. This is just to be sure the perspective owner is worthy of such a fine vessel. However, in the case of a man with 3 wives, we could make this one exception.

You bought what is very likely the finest CD28 around. I've been good friends with the original owners for many years and they took wonderful care of her. She sails like a witch! (that's a good thing) When I wanted to make improvements I always took a look at your boat to see how to do it the right way.

Are you keeping her name or changing it. If you plan to change it be sure to check out the archives for the proper denaming ceremony. You can't take chances with those kinds of things!

You can have confidence that she will keep you and the family safe on the water. Take care of her like she has been cared for and she'll not let you down.

Aaah Skipper, once you have tasted the likes of a Cape Dory you are doomed. The thought of owning a CD is a thirst that can only be quenched by actually owning one. As for the wives, I too am on my third one, but this one loves the CD as much as I do. She's a Keeper.

I guess if I look back at all the boat shows, I think my first was in 80-81?? when I saw a CD25 in Virginia Beach. It took me about 17-18 years also!
