Ladder Treads

Post by Ken Coit »

I came across the installation sheet for the teak treads I used on my previous sailboat some years ago. They were made by Garelick, but have been discontinued. They now provide treads in white poly if anyone cares.

More important, they will sell the end plates and U-brackets that were used with the teak treads; I suppose they may be used with other treads as well.

To check out their current ladder products, go to the link below. You may also contact them via email at: mail@garelick.com

Ask for the end plates and U-brackets for part numbers 26312 (for 7/8" tubing) and 26314 (for 1" tubing). I did not ask about price, but they are stainless.

If you need line drawings of their out-of-production Teak Adapter Steps, let me know. I can scan them and send them along.

Ken, I'd be interested in information on the treads if your experience or that of others suggests they would work on a West Marine ladder. Tentatively, I've planned to order from Tops In Quality, but maybe there is another solution. Comments, recommendations? By the way, I miss seeing Parfait in our neck of the woods.

Joe,

I found that they worked very well when compared with the stainless tubing that my tender feet otherwise had to suffer. They were simple grooved teak planks, cut to fit just inside the uprights and maybe 3" deep by 1" thick.

There are two U-brackets that hold the tread to the rung and two Z-shaped end plates with a semi-circular cutout to engage the upright. The tread, endplate and U-bracket are all bolted together, in that order, one set of plate and bracket on each end of the tread. I'll scan the sheet and send you a copy.

The problem most of us will have with this setup is that the rungs are aligned when the ladder is folded, so it won't fold flat if you have the treads. I continue to think about this late at night when nothing else will do.

Sorry to hear you are missing Parfait. We are enjoying her a lot, but not getting the time aboard that we expected once we retired. Maybe other activities will be quieting down and we can spend more time aboard. I understand that she was replaced by a Grand Banks trawler; seems the former owner was having problems with his hands and his dear wife, the most enthusiastic one, was not up to some of the strains. They kept a pretty good boat and we do like the name. We did change the hailing port from Corpus Christi, TX as it had no meaning to us. I guess she was at Mess About Marina for many years with that hailing port. I think we even kept the slip number! She is in 23 now and I think that is where we picked her up.
