High cost of slips

High cost of slips
I'm guessing that I may hold a record for slip cost this season (but none too proud). I've just re-signed at $145 per foot for May 2002 to May 2003. For my CD26 that works out to $3770. Considering that I'm in Minnesota with a sailing season of just 4 to 5 months, I'm not getting much value. Worse, I'm on a puddle of a lake (really a wide spot in the St. Croix River). It kind of takes away some of the joy of sailing. The only redeeming feature is the drive to the boat is just 20 minutes. What are others paying this year?

Re: High cost of slips
Wow! If I were you, Rich (good name for someone who has a $3700 slip), I take that $3700 and move to the coast! I guess I'm pretty lucky - $75/year for a mooring.

Hate like hell to agree with you, but that is the most expensive slip I have ever heard of....

Re: High cost of slips
Rich,
Does this include winter storage?
Here in Charleston, SC marina slips vary from $5.50 to $10.00 per ft per month. Private dockage is between you and the owner. I pay $1.50 per ft per month on a private dock. I know others that have free dockage.
You might check the possibilities of setting your own mooring. Many boats here are on their own moorings. No fee, just the cost of the mooring tackle. Then you need to find a convenient launch point for your dinghy. I know one guy who paid slip fees on his dinghy ($25 a month). He had all of the marina facilities and a short row to his boat.

My puddle of a lake outside of Atlanta, Ga. is $2100 a year, but we do have year round sailingRich wrote: I'm guessing that I may hold a record for slip cost this season (but none too proud). I pay $950 for the season on Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie for dockspace for my Cape Dory 26. Season is from May 1 through October 31. Yours is pretty high in my opinion, but I guess we do what we have to do. Good luck,

Re: High cost of slips
Ouch, is right. Here on the Chesapeake I'm leasing a slip for $1720/year and that includes water and electric. Even if I haul for the winter it's only another $60 per month for storage on the hard. That's for a CD36 and the sailing season is about nine months long.

Re: High cost of slips
Wow!! I keep my boat on the middle Chesapeake, where we sail from March to November and is a reasonable drive from Philadelphia for $2700 hard and wet storage. Of course there is a charge for hauling, but I would look elsewhere for a better price.Clay Stalker wrote:Rich:Rich wrote: I'm guessing that I may hold a record for slip cost this season (but none too proud). Re: High cost of slips
$200 a month, 12 months a year, plus $400 membership. However, the slip would take a much larger boat. We have several feet on either side and at least 10 in front of us. Ideal for a 45 ft power yacht that draws 5 ft. or less.
Alternatively, you can buy the slip for a total cost of about $45K. Annual membership still required.

Re: High cost of slips
Pricing seems to be a function of supply and demand (duh!). 2.6 million people, relative few large bodies of water. Strange, but in the land of 10,000 lakes, relatively few can support a fixed keel sailing fleet. The options are Lake Pepin, a wide spot in the Mississippi - 1 hour south; Lake Minnetonka, surrounded by $million homes - western suburb; Lake St. Croix, aforementioned wide spot in the St. Croix river - 20 minutes east; Lake Mil Lacs, a relatively shallow big lake more reknowned for fishing than sailing - 90 minutes north; and the big lake, Lake Superior, 3 to 4 hours north.
I have the unfortunate luck of owning a sail boat in a slip renters market. I've heard of slip prices going as high as $5000 per year.
I've considered the mooring concept. My kids make that more hassle than it's worth, at least at their current age. At least I can hold my head high, safe in the knowledge that the record is safe.

Re: High cost of slips
Wow! And I thought mine was expensive at $85/foot and we have to pay for a 34-foot boat since our CD32 has a 2-foot long bowsprit bringing her LOA to 34'2.

Re: High cost of slips
Rich,
Prices vary greatly based on region. My CD26 slip at Point Judith, RI was $100/foot for the summer, $67/foot for the winter storage in 1988.
I was charged like a 28' since heel to toe...the CD26 is 27'11" (marina owner got out his tape when I berth next to him one day against his Pearson 30....says that looks like a mightly big 26 footer!) Anyway one of the cheapest places I knew of in RI for a slip. Town moorings??? well that is another matter when it comes to low cost...my total in 1988 was $4676 per year....
Currently at one of the best marinas in southern Chesapeake Bay (and most expensive) at $2268 per year for 30' single slip, water and power included, pool, laundry, nice first class restaurant, etc...this is one item which really saved my boating from disapearing...

Re: High cost of slips
In the Chicago Harbor system (which is owned by the Park District but run by Westrec Marine, a private company) slips range from about $65 to $85 a foot for the season while a mooring can is around $30 a foot.

Re: High cost of slips
Last summer I had a slip at the Apponaug Harbor Marina in Warwick, R.I. .. It was a 30' slip and was $1920. for the season, including electricity and water. All of the marinas in Warwick are around this price, quite a bit higher next store in East Greenwich. However, Warwick is power-boat heaven and I couldn't wait to get out of there....Bristol is a dream. Usually a waiting list at Apponaug, but I don't think a long one. Not a pretty marina by any stretch, mostly local folks, half sail, half power, but reasonably priced.Dana wrote: Rich,

I'm paying $1700 for the season on Whitehall Creek between Annapolis and the Chespeake Bay Bridge. And another ~$500 for winter storage and bottom paint.
