Going to varnish the teak and holly sole this weekend and wanted to get some feed back from the board on two things:
1. Interlux vs Ephinanes (sp?) Specifically which product by either manufacturer.
2. Have people done just the flat surface of the floor or also varnished the angled teak that transitions from the floor to the settee? Assuming the rest of the wood in the cabin is currently oiled.
Thanks.

Did my sole last weekend with Epifanes Gloss Varnish...somewhat of a pain to use, but looks great. Did the slanted part on the sides with the gloss as well. The rest of my interior is done with Epifanes Interior Satin. Quite frankly, the Captain's Varnish is easier to use and looks great, but I really like the Epifanes....

Re: Varnishing the Cabin Sole-Advice
Brian, I've used Interlux Clipper Clear (now 95, I believe) on two boats; one a 28. I also did the angled portion as it had deteriorated somewhat. I've been pleased with it. I've not used Epiphanes on the interior, but I've used it on exteriors with good results. What I like about this particular Interlux product is that it has less tendancy than some varnishes to add an amber glow. Presumably that results in a sole where the ash is less yellow, if that matters. I'm only about half way through completing our 30; 3 coats so far, but at least it's protected a little.

Re: previously oiled sole
My sole has been oiled, but I want to varnish it. What preparations are recommended considering the history of the use of oil on the sole?

Re: previously oiled sole
You need to get the old oil and dirt out or the varnish will not bond.
I would wash the sole in small sections with a moderately strong solution of TSP with a little dish soap and bleach added. Wash in sections and rinse thouroughly. Wash with both a nylon scrub brush and a scotch brite pad. One gets in the cracks and the other does the surface. Dont let the water stay on too long. Suck up both the rinse water and soapy stuff with a wet/dry vac. Let it dry thouroughly and test the dry wood by putting a drop of water on it. If it soaks in quickly then you have the oil and dirt out. If not (beads up) then wash again. You want to keep the washing proceedure to a minimum so as not to raise the grain very much and still get out the oil and dirt.
Sand lightly (just enough to take off the fuzzies raised by the water). Vacuum and follow mfgrs directions for prep.
As always test an inconspicous place with all proceedures before committing to the entire project.
Good luck...

Re: previously oiled sole
Keith,
I used the method Boyd described. I then applied 3 coats of Epiphanes Gloss Varnish and 2 coats of Epiphanes Rubbed Effect. I am pleased with the results. Along with sanding inbetween coats, use a brown 3M scotchbrite pad also. Have fun.
