CD 30 Table Woe

Post by Matthew Atkinson »

"Tinker" (hull 77) came with an rv style table, pedestal mounts (2) in the bottom of the table with insets in the cabin sole. One of the insets has broken, rendering the table useless and leaving a large passage to the bilge. It seems that in order to replace the inset, I need to remove the sole veneer to come at the machine bolts - basically it looks like I have to tear up the floor. I know other CD's came with a bulkhead mounted table. Are they good? Well secured when underway? Of course, I've installed a deisel/kerosene heater on the port bulkhead. Are there starboard mounting options - who makes 'em?

Many thanks for any table suggestions.

This is a tough one. The port side bulkhead is larger than the starboard bulkhead, so a table would fit there better than on the starboard side, but you have the heater on that port bulkhead which complicates things greatly.
So the choices as I see them are to try and repair the cabin sole mounted fittings for the existing table, or build a fold-up table for the starboard side bulkhead..maybe with extension leaves or flip out extender to allow both settees access to the table.

You should know that there are no builders of these tables any more..at least as a function of building from a prototype provided by Cape Dory..so it would be a home designed table, and maybe getting a cabinet shop to put it together for you..or doing it yourself if you are comfortable working with wood. If that existing table is teak, hang on to it..it's worth a fortune!

One option that intriques me is that since you are used to the rv type table, couldn't you make a set of pedestals to support the existing table..that would be permanently attached to the cabin sole? (I am assuming that your old table was setup all the time..right?)
This set of supports could be attached from on top of the sole so that the old holes were covered up, or used even (not sure what this arrangement looks like).

Write if I can help.

I have taken photos of the table on Slow Dance and sent them to others. If they would be of any help, let me know and I'll get them to you. I think Larry's right on all counts. You'd need to modify it somewhat.

Matthew,

Consider mounting a collar on the table leg to control the depth of the leg. Make the collar so that it rests on the cabin sole when the table is at the right height. It might be simpler and cheaper than finding and replacing the broken receptacle. The existing design gets what little rigidity it has from the tapered leg into the tapered receptacle. The collar would need a large enough diameter to provide equivalent stability.

Good luck,

If this helps - We just bought a new stand for our table on our CD25, which was missing when we bought the boat. We got an RV style one, complete with top & bottom mounts for $15.99 from JC Whitney. It's just chromed and will probably rust someday - but I can replace it many times before it will cost the same as a marine one.

Counting down to launch...

Hi

I recently sent drawings and pictures of the bulkhead mounted table from my CD30 MKII to several others who are contemplating building tables. If you would like copies drop me a note.
