Second Chance's original painted name lettering was starting to look very beaten up, so I decided to order vinyl instead of having it repainted. There was no existing hailing port (she's not documented), and I wanted to add that as well.
I looked at BoatUS and West and brochures I got from various boat shows, and surfed the net. While surfing the net I came across www.boat-lettering.com which is a small business in Saskatchewan with a very nifty website. On the website you can instantly see your chosen name in over 100 different fonts and many different colors. If you e-mail them a photo of your boat, they will superimpose various chosen font sizes and colors on the picture and e-mail you back the samples to help decide.
I decided to order from them. After sampling various fonts and sizes I chose imitation Gold Leaf with Black outline, with a fairly traditional font (their font #121). They shipped it overnight and it arrived Friday. I applied the lettering yesterday. WOW!
The stern looks very classy now, and I do recommend this small business. The owner even called me during the selection process to cut out innumerable e-mails, and to make sure he got the order perfect. Total cost was USD 98.50 plus shipping. I have no idea whether the large discounters would have been less money, but I do feel that the service and final product by patronizing this small internet-based business was worth what I spent.
I have a "before" picture, and I plan to take an "after" picture in the next day or two if anyone wants to see them.

Bill,
Sail Second Chance across the Hudson to Haverstraw Marina. That's where we had Realization's boat lettering installed -- ordered it from them too. They did a great job of removing Realization's former name and hailing port too.

It sounds like you found a great service. We do boat lettering only once in a while, and our most recent was Peter Baumgardner's London, a CD 27 that was featured in This Old Boat. As I recall, there are "before" and "after" shots showing the Big Marine Discounter lettering, and also our stuff. It shounds like your guys are comparable.
In terms of service, there's no good reason not to get a couple of shots of the new layout(s) on the transom of your boat, as long as you can e-mail a digital shot of the boat. We did this for Peter and also mailed him full-size templates of two options to check clearance of the fuel vent and exhaust. I recommend this step unless you are sure there will be no problem.
I would be happy to give you any application tips you might need.

s/v Macht Nichts,
Sir, one can claim whatever one wants when there is NO ONE out there to see! Hanalei would have been there, but the "dippy" Captain left the stays'l boom in the shed at home, so could not have all flags flying. Therefore, gave up and drank grog for the day......sail training starting Thursday next, 80 degrees forecast, 30 Knot Easterlies, perfect for Hanalei......
