CD25 Winches

CD25 Winches
Suzi Q still has what I beleive are the original winches. They are made of some composite layered material with two metal bands. They were jammed but after some cleaning and rebuilding they have been working fine. I did not see any markings on them anywhere when I took them apart so I do not know who made them.
I plan to add a winch to the cabin top and I was thinking about what winch to get. I would like to have a matching set and I noticed that many 25s have newer winches.
I was wondering if any CD25 Captain has upgraded from the original winches. If so, do you have them still and would you sell them to me. This is assuming that they are the same as mine. I don't know if all 25s were produced with the same hardware. I only need one but the extra parts would be good too.
E-mail me at address above if there is anyone who can help.
Thanks as usual.

Re: CD25 Winches
Will; Although I haven't upgraded from the original bronze Lewmar 6's.
If I were in your shoes I would opt for the Lewmar 6 or 7 (bronze, if you please). The 6's are a tad bit under powered for a 150 gen but work adequately. I beleieve the 7 would give a tad bit more leverage and will fit the winch base that the 6 is mounted on. If you aren't fussy about the traditional bronze look go with the stainless Anderson
6 or 7.

Re: CD25 Winches
What year is Suzi Q ? My CD25 is a '74 and has what I believed (because they are so weathered) the original Barlow single speed winches. Now I'm now wondering if that's what was the original in '74.

Re: CD25 Winches
John & Don
As I mentioned before I took them completely apart and found no markings anywhere. No name, no serial number, nothing not even a size.
They appear to be made of some fabric held together with plastic or resin or something, They are not metal but there are two metal bands on the turning part of the winch. the inside gears and post are some kind of metal. There is a large screw on the top of them to hold them to the post that they turn on. The top of the winch spins independently from the bottom and the handle goes through this top part. Also they can be put back together to spin either way. Does this sound like yours John? Oh yeah, she is Hull # 249 made in 1975.
As far as power goes I don't know much about the available ratings but I am sure I can do better, but these work well. The technology is basic but seems pretty bullet proof. I did pull Suzi Q trough some serious mud for over 100 feet one day using the winch on the mast. I doubt I would ever put more of a load on one while sailing, than I did that day so I think they are fine. Also buying a matching set of four new right now is not in the budget.
I will take a digital picture of one tomorrow and I can e-mail it to anyone to see if ours are the same. It would be nice to know if these are actually original or not and maybe who made them. They certainly seem old enough to be mid 70s.
Don you mentioned that your 25 came with bronze Lewmars. Do they say it on there somewhere or do you just know that that is what Cape Dory was using on the 25. Is it possible that boats were sold in some cases from the factory without those things, Winches etc. To be added later by a dealer or buyer. I have not been around sailboats that long but I have seen no other non metal winches, other than mine.
Thanks Again

Will:
I know the winches you're talking about. My dad had an old CD 25 a 73 or 74 model. I don't know the make. I doubt if you can get a new one that matches. My brother bought a winch very similar to those last year on ebay. Keep in mind that if you ever loose that winch handle you'll have a hell of a time replacing it.

Re: CD25 Winches
I too have a CD25 and I replaced the original winches with LEWMAR self-tailing bronze winches. They work very well and look beautiful. I've had only one problem. The winches are a little bigger than the originals and they actually cracked the teak combing once when I was winching hard on a windy day. So I added a new piece of teak between the combing and the winches and it works great and looks nice too.

Will,
This does not sound like mine at all.. the pics would be good as now I'm curious.. also the hull number.. I have a 74' and always thought my hull number matched the sail number 288.. I have the registration saying 1974 but did see in some of the paperwork ( old survey I think)mentioning 1975.. anyway I love the dory no matter how old she is !
Good luck !

Re: CD25 Winches
My 1981 CD25 has bronze Lewmars #6 port and Starboard with a Chrome one on the mast, It does state the mfg. and size on top of the winch. Though sometimes I wish for more power when the 150 is up they seem to be adequate, I am going to try some winchers on them this year instead of replacing them with new since a tailer would be nice.

Re: CD25 hull #
John
Your hull #, year and month of manufacture I think are in the hull id # on the transom. Yours should read CPDE0288?yr?. The first ? is a letter then, yr is the year on mine yr reads 75. The second ? is another letter that I think represents the month of manufacture. Mine is E so I surmise that Suzi Q was built in May of 75.
I'm pretty sure i got this right but if not I'm sure someone will know. If you have your registration or title at home you can get the number off that. You may want to make sure they match what is on the boat as well.

Depends....
See the link below for HIN decoding. Before sometime in 1984, the boat manufacturing year started in August, so January would be indicated by the letter "F".

Re: CD25 Winches
The winches on my original '74 hull #88 are just as you describe. I have taken mine apart and cleaned them a couple of times and they work great with the handle. One of the tips on the handle broke off but the handle still works fine. I notices that later models switched to some other winch not long after mine. I believe they were manufactured in England but don't know where I came to believe that is so. There may have been a reference in the owners manual or in some of the advertising material at the time.
