This is in response to Joe Wallace's question...When I first bought my Intrepid 28, the service manager noticed that my cutless bearing seemed loose and he recommended that it be replaced before I launched. As they did the work of extracting the bearing the strut started to crack apart. Now a minor job suddenly turned into an expensive repair job because the way CD attached those struts was rather poor. Basically the strut's straight tail end is sunk into the fresh uncured hull where it more or less becomes permanently embedded. In order to replace my strut, a big hole had to be cut into my hull so that the gob of resin that housed the tail of the strut could be removed. Then they patched the hull and put in a new strut, once again sinking it into resin. The only difference is that the ran a bolt perpendicular through the tail of the strut so that the thing would be more stable and better anchored. Also the strut they used to replace the old one was much more robust. Total cost of the job was around $2500.
