Yesterday I was cruising along under power (Volvo MD 7) with the tachometer displaying 2,000 RPM. When suddenly, the tach. needle started to swing in 500 RPM arcs. At the same time, the temperature gauge climbed almost into the red, then declined to barely in the green, then back to the red, etc. This continued for the next ten minutes until I reduced power upon arrival at my marina. During the whole time, the throttle was not changed, the sound of the engine never changed, nor did the amount of water exiting through the exhaust change. Any ideas?

Any ideas?Have you recently added any gauges or changed the alternator or added any charging equip? Sounds like your alternator or alt field wire is bad. Does the tach swing more or faster when eng RPM is changed. Let me know.PJC
