Auto bilge pump & Datamarine instruments
Plan to install Rule 1500 pump with float switch in CD 30. I Know much has been written re: this subject. Has anyone installed into existing manual pump outlet line with satisfaction - or if there is any other preferred method ie: separate outlet? Also, phone is disconnectd at Datamarine, Pocasset Ma. Don't know if I want to get involved with said company in the future. Depthsounder gives false alarm and not sure of accuracy of knotmeter. I believe these instruments to be original Datamarine equipment. (1982). Any suggestions on updating - other manufacturers? Perhaps a mount on binnacle post? Appreciate any comments!

Re: Knotmeter........
Captain Kelley:
The knot meter can be calibrated! There is a short procedure in the instruction manual that came with the instrument. Hope this helps....
OK, now tell us how ya lost the rig over the side......

This may help? I made contact with a former repairman from Data and who at last contact had a independant repair shop for these old units. Try calling 508-563-7151 or 508-564-7491. I just received a new transponder from them for a depth meter. If you can not find them using the above numbers, get back and I'll do some better research.Jack Kelley wrote: Plan to install Rule 1500 pump with float switch in CD 30. Re: Auto bilge pump & Datamarine instruments
Datamarine seems to be definitely out of business. However, they did have a reputation for a good product. The ones on my CD 30 lasted 15+ years, in fact the depth sounder is still going strong. The knot meter, however, doesn't always work. Sometimes it just shows 8888888 all across the screen. When it does show speed, it seems to be accurate though. I sent the instrument head back for repair but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The trick will be to find one the same size and shpe to fit in the Edson pod mounted on the helm.

Re:Datamarine instruments
I have just installed the Raymarine knotmeter/sounder (Tridata display w/ two transducers) as replacement for my DataMarine instruments. The existing holes in the hull were perfect for the new transducers (had to pull the thru hull from the old knotmeter to install the new).
Everything fit & appears to be working fine. My hands are scraped & my back may never be the same from the cabling in the bilge (to the pod on the binnacle). The Raymarine instrument head fit the Edson pods used by DataMarine, but new face plates were required.
I can bore you with the details--if you let me--of the work.
Every best wish.

Re: Auto bilge pump & Datamarine instruments
I have owned a Cape Dory 30 cutter, 1977 for 10 years. I installed a Rule 1500 bilge pump in 1992. The hose is 1 1/18" ID and not compatable with the 2" manual pump hose. I installed a separate bilge pump hose and thru hull fitting above the water line near the manual pump thru hull. It works great. However, a word of caution. The electric bilge pump does not have a back flow preventer. Be sure to train the hose high up against the bottom of the cockpit seat to prevent (backflow) incoming water. I learned this the hard way while sailing on a starboard tack in heavy weather. The bilge filled with water and overflowed onto the cabin sole.
Have you experienced water intrusion at the top of rudder post onto the cockpit sole when under power? Cape Dory did not provide a gland fitting at the top of the fiberglass rudder tube.
