Req: What size yachtbraid for jib sheets

Post by Mario »

A quickie--what size doublebraid cordage do people use for jib sheets on a CD 30'? The old sheets are single braid and as I recall are 1/2".

Thanks--
Mario

Mario,

We use 1/2 in. which is sufficiently strong by a long margin, but mainly the deciding factor is a thing called "Hand". It is a measure of how easily the line is Handled by the user. Smaller diameter lines are more difficult to grab and pull hard on, until they reach 7/16in. at least. The finish also has a lot to do with the Hand of a sheet, so read the advertising blurbs for New England Cordage and the others, and pay attention to when they mention the Hand of the line. Some line is made specificly to have a better Hand, and that trnaslates to better grip onthe winch, as well as a more easily obtained grip on the line itself. 1/2 in. is about as large as I would go though. Our cleats start getting a bit crowded with 9/16in. cordage.

Cheers,

Mario, the specs call for 7/16". I agree with Larry that "hand" is important, and 1/2" may feel better. The type (brand, etc.) will impact on that, too. One caveat, however; older Lewmar self-tailing winches were designed for particular sizes of line. You might check to see there's no conflict depending upon which winches you have.

I just put 7/16 Samson Trophy Braid on KAYLA. I don't believe that New England Ropes has anything close to the comfort of Trophy Braid. Of course, West Marine does NOT sell Samson, but Defender does and at a great price to boot!

Thanks for the tip--I'll dig out the Defender Catalog and take a look at it.

We just bought 5/8" sheets for our new roller-furling 140% genny. That's the largest size that the blocks will handle. They are luxuriously thick and soft and make handling the bigger sail much easier.
