CD28 Engine Replacement

My husband and I are seriously considering purchasing a 1975, CD28 that seems to be in very good (sound) condition; however, noticed some oil in the bilge. Seeking advice/information about replacing the 13 HP Volvo MD2....or info about that original engine.

Just replaced my MD7A last month in our 1979 28 CD and it was a very expensive project, as the new engines just don't fit where the old engine was mounted.

I replaced it with a new Volvo 2020 which is actually a Japanese block and marinized by Perkins with Catapiller parts for Volvo. Works great, but if the engine in the boat you are looking at is sick and tired, get a quote on a new installation before you purchase your l975 Cape Dory.

I believe an MD2B is 20 h.p.-2 cylinder-do your research-and you will probably find the volvos are the work horses of sailboat engines-call Dipietro-International-1-800-447-9482-as one source that I know is reputable-they mave a rebuilt engine and gearbox "on the shelf" that will bolt right in-and you'd be good for another 25 years-I suspect it would be for about the price of a new motor plus the re-engineering-don't forget-once you get the motor out-you might as well do the fuel tanks as well-as thats the only way they come out-and they are originial I'm sure-then you might as well do the stuffing box-prop shaft-shaft log-wiring-repaint the compartment-etc.-but remmeber-everything is probably due to replace-as its 25 years old-if everything -sails-rigging-etc is tired-the boat is not worth much more than low teens-imho-but it can be "regenerated" and you end up with a much nicer boat than you could ever but new (assuming they made one) -good luck

I'd identify the source of the oil before I considered replacing a perfectly good engine. There are lots of ways for oil to get into the bilge... the easiest way is miss while trying to pour it into the engine.
