My CD-33 Bandolera II has a Universal diesel Model 30 #5425. Currently I have a bronze 1" shaft connected to a 4" inflexible coupler bolted to the Hurth #100 tranny, which makes for a difficult alignment job. Does anyone have a FLEXIBLE coupler on this type of engine/shaft situation and how do you like it? My engine has some vibration, especially during the higher rpm's, when I throttle past 1700 rpm's. I have just installed brand new Universal/Westerbeke engine mounts, which replaced the old broken ones. But would like opinions on a Flexible Coupler, and where can I buy one? Thanks

FLEXIBLE COUPLING for 1" SHAFT

Re: FLEXIBLE COUPLING for 1" SHAFT
Here's a few for you:
Vetus, Evolution, Drivesaver, Globe, Rotoflex, PYI.
Some suppliers are: Defender, Hamilton Marine, Vetus and local to Miami would be Lewis or you can try Mastry in St. Pete if Grove was too high $$$. Keep in mind a good flex coupler isn't cheap!

Re: FLEXIBLE COUPLING for 1" SHAFT
Zeida,
Do you mean that the packing gland is attatched to a fixed stern tube without the aid of a flexible connection? If that is the case you can remedy that, but it will require some surgery. If you're just looking for a flexible connection between the prop shaft and the shaft out of the engine then the PYI is a pretty good unit. I just installed one in my boat and it helped reduce some vibration. Be aware tho' that installing any kind of flexible coupler will push your prop back in the aperture the thickness of the coupler....1 1/2" in the case of the PYI. Technically, there are minimum distances from any point on the prop to any point on the hull/rudder that should be kept. It may not be a problem, but you need to know if you have the room back there. If you don't.....it's either a new shaft or "customising" your current one to compensate for the thickness of the coupler.
